Neat & Tangled November Release: Day Two

0

Happy Tuesday crafters! I am so happy you stopped back again today for some more Neat & Tangled inspiration!

releaseweek-01

This week I am sharing inspiration using the newest products from Neat & Tangled’s November release, and today I have a video featuring the Scandinavian Prints Christmas stamp set!

stamp-layering-easy-mass-producing-cards_1

This stamp set is one of my new favorites! I love the whimsical style of these trees, as well as the simplistic stamp layering pieces that allow you to build one of a kind trees!

stamp-layering-easy-mass-producing-cards_3

An added bonus with this set is that it can be used outside of the holiday season too, for cute wintry thinking of you cards! Who doesn’t love receiving a heart warming card from a friend, especially during the long, cold winters that will soon be upon us!

stamp-layering-easy-mass-producing-cards_5

I created a full set of these cards in a variety of different colors; proof that holiday cards don’t always have to be “traditionally” colored!

stamp-layering-easy-mass-producing-cards_6

For inks, I’ve chosen to work with one of my favorite ink brands; Altenew Crisp Inks. These, -as well as the Simon Says Stamp inks- are my most loved ink brands. I used a bunch of color combos, which I will list out for you (all inks are from Altenew unless otherwise noted):

green: Frayed Leaf, Forest Glades, Green Leaf (Simon Says Stamp), Evergreen

turquoise green: Mountain Mist, Volcano Lake, Lagoon, Emerald

pink: Rose Quartz, Puffy Heart, Purple Wine, Cosmic Berry

bright red: Cotton Candy, Coral Berry, Ruby Red, Grapevine

rustic red: Blush, Rouge, Crimson, Velvet

blue: Sea Glass, Caribbean Sky, Persian Blue, Sapphire

stamp-layering-easy-mass-producing-cards_4

These were really fun to make! The reason I made so many was in support of the Caring Hearts Card Drive. This card drive is spearheaded by Vera Yates; she is a very talented crafter and I think that the card drive that she has been hosting for the past 7 years is a great cause to support! The purpose of the drive is to collect Holiday cards that are then distributed to nursing/assisted living homes around the world as a way to bring care, love and kindness into the lives of those that will be receiving the cards. For complete details, including where to submit cards, etc., please visit Vera’s blog HERE.

It is celebrated by making phone calls, writing letters, sending emails and cards or getting together with friends and family! It’s a way to let our loved ones – especially those we don’t get to see as often – that we love them, care about them and were thinking of them.

In honor of this day, I have put together a thinking of you card that features some Simon exclusive products, including the You Matter stamp and die set! Here’s a sneak peek of the card I am sharing on the Simon blog:

Paper Christmas Ornaments + Simon’s December Card Kit

Hi crafty friends! Today is the release of the brand new December 2016 Merry & Bright card kit from Simon Says Stamp!

december-holiday-card-kit_927-01

This kit features a collection of AMAZING products, which I know you will be excited to receive! The pattern papers immediately caught my eye when I opened the kit box and I was really loving the bright, happy Christmas colors.

paper-ornaments-simon-december-kit_11

I thought it would be fun to use the papers to create ornaments. I used to create origami designs when I was younger; it was always so rewarding to see a flat piece of paper turn into something intricate and detailed… and doing something like this makes me remember those things.

I’ve put together videos for each ornament, so that you can see how they were put together and follow along to make them yourself! You can check them out below…

PAPER FOLDED SCALLOP ORNAMENTS

paper-ornaments-simon-december-kit_4

This one features a scallop-edge design using the Lawn Fawn Scalloped Circle Stackables dies; however, you could create this same design without the scallops using a plain circle die (or other shapes!)

I used the Doodlebug pattern papers that were included in the kit, along with the blue cardstock. I also used the Simon Says Stamp Anna snowflake die and Nuvo’s Pure Sheen glitter to add additional details to the ornament.

Be sure to check out the video below to see how this ornament came together! If you enjoy, please give the video a thumbs up!

PAPER CHRISTMAS GLOBE ORNAMENT

paper-ornaments-simon-december-kit_3

This “globe” ornament features a bit more intricate looking design, but in reality, it wasn’t too much harder – nor took any more time – to  make than the first ornament! I again used the Doodlebug papers from the kit, along with the blue cardstock.

For finishing touches, I added just some Sparkling Clear sequins from Pretty Pink Posh, but the impact is huge! I added them in little patterns inside each of the triangle areas of the ornament; this little touch really creates a sparkly effect that I think is the perfect way to finish off the design.

Hello everyone! Happy Thanksgiving!!!  I hope your day is filled with family, friends, love and laughter, as you celebrate and give thanks for all the blessings in your life. Today I am sharing a video that is part of the 25 Days of Christmas Tags event, hosted by Tracey McNeely!

14753945_10207950334221680_293017202692158632_o

Each day since November 1st, Tracey has teamed up with different companies and individuals to bring creative inspiration to YOU in the form of holiday gift tags! The really fun thing is that Tracey also encourages you to join in the fun too by submitting your own tag designs inspired by a specific day and tag during the 25 Days of Christmas Tags. Full details on how everything works can be found on Tracey’s blog HERE.

Since today is Pretty Pink Posh’s day on Tracey’s blog, I am honored to be taking part and sharing inspiration using some of my current favorite Pretty Pink Posh products!

ombre-watercolor-tags-with-frosted-edges_4

I love ombré and wanted to incorporate that into these tags by doing some Distress Ink watercoloring. I watercolored onto tags that I cut from the Stitched Essentials die set (from Pretty Pink Posh). I used sentiments from the Holiday Greetings stamp set (not available for individual purchase), and the cardinal image came from the Christmas Friends stamp set.

ombre-watercolor-tags-with-frosted-edges_6

The kissing cardinals are super cute aren’t they???

ombre-watercolor-tags-with-frosted-edges_3These tags are very simple to recreate, and in the video below, I’ll be sharing the details on how I did it, as well as how I created the beautiful frosted edging on the tags! I hope you’ll be checking it out!

Thanks again for stopping by and spending part of your Thanksgiving with me today! I plan on doing some crafting and watching my Minnesota Vikings play the Detroit Lions (and WIN hopefully too!) after enjoying a nice turkey dinner!

Light Up Card + Simon’s Merry Christmouse Stamp Set Is Back!

Hello friends, Happy Monday!! For those of you who haven’t heard yet… today is the day that Simon is bringing back the VERY popular Merry Christmouse stamp set!

from-the-vault_lawn-fawn_638-01

This set was released back during STAMPtember of 2015 and was SO popular it sold out immediately. Normally, Simon does not bring back STAMPtember exclusive sets, but this one was so highly requested that Simon decided to surprise everyone and bring it back one more time! Since this is such a special treat, Simon is also hosting a celebratory blog hop today, which you can find out more details about at the bottom of this post.

light-up-card-simons-merry-christmouse-set_4

I love the effects that the Chibitronics lights can give to cards; I’ve done one of these a couple months ago (you can see it here), and thought I would give it another go to add some interactive fun to these images from the Merry Christmouse stamp set! I did a very basic circuit for this card, partly because the first circuit path I was going to create didn’t end up working out all that great, and also because I was only using one light on this card anyway, so I didn’t need anything elaborate. So if you are new to the Chibitronics lights and/or not yet comfortable with doing something more involved, you might want to give this idea a try.

light-up-card-simons-merry-christmouse-set_1

I used Copic markers to color in these images; if you are interested in the color combinations I used for each image, I have them listed below:

  • gray mouse with present: W2, W4, W5. R0000, R20, R46, R59, YG25, YG23, N0
  • tan mouse with Santa hat: E30, E34, E35, R0000, R20, R46, R59
  • gray brown mouse: E42, E43, E44, R20, R0000
  • trees & presents: Y00, Y15, Y19, R46, R59, YG23, YG25

Partial Shaped Shaker + Simon’s DieCember Blog Hop

Hi everyone! Today I am participating in a special blog hop celebrating Simon Says Stamp’s DieCember™ release!

If you have already been hopping along with us, you should have arrived here from the amazing Heather Hoffman’s blog; but if you are just joining in, WELCOME! You can find the entire hop list at the bottom of this post.

I love creating shaker cards and I thought it would be fun to use the new Fold Over Tree die and create a different type of shaker!

This one is only a partial shaker because the tree only partially die cuts into the cardstock; it also does not shake much (on purpose), as I wanted to have lots of sequins sandwiched in there to create a colorful background inside the shaker window.

I also wanted to add some special touches to this card by die cutting the Corbel Border die into the card base… the result is a delicate, see-through design that adds an elegant touch to the card. I had so much fun making these cards, I ended up doing a set of 4!

Matching Pillow Box & Tag Set + Simon’s January Card Kit

Hi everyone and Happy Wednesday! It’s the 14th of the month, which means it is time to reveal the newest monthly card kit from Simon Says Stamp!

This kit, Snow Much Thanks, is ADORABLE! I love the wintry color palette of pinks, teals and purples, don’t you? I wanted to use the pattern papers (which are a Simon exclusive collection put together by Authentique), and create a set of pillow boxes and matching tags.

These little gift sets are perfect for holding small presents or gift cards, and are easy to make with the help of the We R Memory Keepers Pillow Box Punch Board.

I created the coordinating tags using the new Simon Says Stamp Frozen Fractals stamp set (also included in the kit), as well as the Pretty Pink Posh Stitched Essentials tag die set.

To see how these tags and pillow boxes came together using the new Snow Much Thanks kit, I hope you will check out the video below!

Chibitronics Light Up Card + My Favorite Things

0
0

Hello crafty friends! With Christmas just around the corner, I wanted to share a fun light up card video with you that features Chibitronics lights and My Favorite Things stamps and dies.

While this card may have a bit of a Christmas feel to it, I think this could be used for more than just Christmas; you could keep the holiday theme and use it as a thank you or thinking of you card for right after Christmas… just because the holiday is over, doesn’t mean you have to stop giving holiday cards out, right??  I purposely used a “sending warm hugs” sentiment so that I could do just that! The images and sentiment are from both the Merry Christmoose and Sweet Forest Friends stamp set by My Favorite Things.

Of course my favorite part about this whole card is the fact that it lights up! The Chibitronic light kits make it very easy to make these fun, interactive light up elements on your card and in today’s video, I will be sharing how I used the Beginner’s kit to create a glowing effect on my tree.

Because this video is more about building the light up element than the coloring, I sped up the coloring process in the video. For those of you that want to know what Zig marker colors I use for the card, I have them listed below for you to reference.

  • Moose: Wine Red 024, Olive Green 043, Mid Brown 065, Oatmeal 064, Dull Blue 034, Shadow Mauve 303, Mid Gray 096, Pale Pink 028
  • Bunny: Cool Gray 1 099, Pale Pink 028
  • Birds: Wine Red 024, Pale Pink 028, Dull Blue 034, Yellow 050
  • Tree: Deep Green 044, Light Green 041, Dark Oatmeal 066, Dark Brown 062, Shadow Mauve 303, Yellow 050
  • Ground/Background: Oatmeal 064, Dark Oatmeal 066, Yellow 050

I hope you will check out the video to see how this card came together! I love making interactive cards… they are not only so much fun to make, but even more fun to give!

Shimmer Die Cut Backgrounds + Die Cutting Tips

0
0

Hello crafty friends and Happy Tuesday! Today I have some inspiration for you that features some of the Simon Says Stamp DieCember release products. In this video, I will be sharing tips on creating die cut backgrounds, as well as other die cutting tips in general.

Shimmer Die Cut Backgrounds Nina-Marie Design

While these cards may have a Valentine’s theme to them, they could easily be used year round for a variety of occasions; this is one of the things I love so much about “I love you” cards! Another thing I love is how versatile die cutting can be. With a few dies and a bit of imagination, you can create some unique and stunning designs very quickly. For instance, I used the Simon Says Stamp Envelope Liner dies to create the background of these cards. Technically, the Envelope Liner die set is meant to be used for decorating envelopes. But pretty much every single die in the set can also be used on a card instead! By taping the border dies together (from the Envelope Liner set), I was able to create an intricate design into my card bases.

Shimmer Die Cut Backgrounds Nina-Marie Design

A question I get often when I do die cut backgrounds on my card bases, is whether or not the card can hold up the weight of the embellishments. This depends greatly on cardstock weight; 80lb cardstock can work, depending on how heavy the rest of your design is. I personally recommend 100lb cardstock (I particularly enjoy using the Simon Says Stamp brand of 100lb cardstock best, with Bazzil’s close behind). 100lb cardstock will hold up against the weight of your embellishments better, and also will not tear as easily either.

After creating my die cut card bases, putting the rest of the card together was very easy! I layered two hearts (die cut using the Memory Box Stitched Heart Layers set), and popped them off the card with foam tape. Next I created a stacked sentiment with Simon Says Stamp’s White Diamond glimmer cardstock and the Heartfelt die set; the stacked sentiment adds stability to the intricate die cut, making it easier to adhere and more like an embellishment, instead of a piece of paper. For a supporting sentiment, I heat embossed the words “I love you”, which were from Simon’s You Matter stamp set.

Shimmer Die Cut Backgrounds Nina-Marie Design

Finally, no card is complete without a few embellishments, right? You’ll notice that the card bases have shimmer on them; for this I used Imagine Crafts‘ shimmer spritz in the color Frost. I spray the shimmer over the paper from about 1 foot above; if you are concerned about getting shimmer spray onto areas besides your project, you may want to spray into a box or take it outside. Besides the shimmer spritz, I added additional bling to the cards using Pretty Pink Posh Sparkling Clear Sequins (which happen to be some of my favorite sequins of all time!).

Shimmer Die Cut Backgrounds Nina-Marie Design

I hope today’s cards have inspired you and that you will be checking out today’s video to see how these cards came together! Thanks so much for visiting me today, I will see you again later this week for another video tutorial!

Little Details That Make A Card Pop

Little Details to Make a Card Pop Nina-Marie Design

Hello everyone, I hope you are having a very happy Tuesday so far! Today I want to share a video tutorial with you that features Honey Bee stamps and dies, as well as tips for adding extra details to bring your cards to life.

Honey Bee is a newer stamp company that has really hit the ground running with their creative and beautifully designed products. I was very excited when Lisa and Melissa (the owner) from Honey Bee Stamps asked if I would share a couple projects this month using their stamps!

In this video, I will be using the gorgeous Country Bloom stamps and dies from Honey Bee Stamps. I love the gorgeous, hand drawn feel of the floral images in this set! They are perfect for coloring, so I used my Copic markers to color them in.

Little Details to Make a Card Pop Nina-Marie Design

After coloring the images, I cut them out using the coordinating Country Blooms dies. A few of the dies in this set are solid (unlike most wafer-thin dies which are open in the center). I like being able to die cut after I stamp and color an image. However, with a solid coordinating die it is impossible to line it up with the stamped image because you cannot see through it. In the video, I will share my method for lining up the dies perfectly with my stamped and colored images!

Little Details to Make a Card Pop Nina-Marie Design

The sentiments I used were made using Simon’s Painted Thanks die and You Matter stamp set. The Painted Thanks sentiment is layered by cutting both white and purple cardstock and adhering them together.

Little Details to Make a Card Pop Nina-Marie Design

Because little details bring a card like this to life, I want to highlight in the video below what exactly those details were. They are discrete, but the impact of those subtleties makes all the difference. I hope you will watch the video to see more on that!

Thanks so much for stopping by and visiting with me today. I hope I will be seeing you again very soon!

Studio Monday with Nina-Marie: Adding Dimension to Solid Stamping

Adding Dimension to Solid Stamping | Nina-Marie Design

Hello friends! I wanted to stop by and share my latest Studio Monday video with you that I created for Simon Says Stamp! This week I am featuring Reverse Confetti stamps and dies as I show you how to add some simple dimensional details to solid stamped images.

Save

Adding Dimension to Solid Stamping | Nina-Marie Design

For this technique I used Prismacolor colored pencils to add dimensional shading to the flowers and leaves I stamped using Reverse Confetti’s Rose Garden stamp set.

These roses are beautiful stamped in a single color of ink, which you could definitely do. But I love to add more interest to my stamping, so by using the colored pencils to create depth, I was able to achieve a more realistic effect.

Adding Dimension to Solid Stamping | Nina-Marie Design

For those of you interested in the ink colors I used, I chose: Rose Apple and Teeny Bikini for the roses, Duckling for the floral sprigs, and both Jellybean and Fern for the leaves.

Adding Dimension to Solid Stamping | Nina-Marie Design

The sentiment you see here is from another Reverse Confetti set called A Friend Like You. I used both the Rose Apple and some Slate Gray ink to stamp the sentiment.

For the background of the floral arrangement, I created stripes with a Copic marker and ink blended a bit of Jellybean ink. To embellish the card I sprinkled a few Sparkling Clear sequins from Pretty Pink Posh in between the roses for a bit of shine.

Adding Dimension to Solid Stamping | Nina-Marie Design

I hope you will be checking out the video to see how I created the dimensional roses! Thanks for stopping by and visiting me today… I’ll be back again very soon!

Studio Monday with Nina-Marie: 5 Ways to Use Circle Dies

5 Ways to Use Circle Dies | Nina-Marie Design

Hello friends! Happy Monday! Today I am sharing a video I shared on the Simon Says Stamp blog for Studio Monday! I featured a technique overview, demonstrating 5 different ways to use circle dies.

Many of you have basic shape dies, such as circles. There are a ton of different ways you can use circles dies besides the obvious ways. My hope is that today’s post will give you inspiration for stretching the use of those dies!

RECOMMENDED DIES

For those of you that are new to card making, or are looking for a great circle die set, I thought I would first touch on dies I would recommend. In this video I will be using Simon Says Stamp’s Nested Circle dies. These are my favorite circle dies. There is a large variety of sizes included in the set, which I really like. Nested dies such as these allow you to use them on a wide range of projects.

Similar dies that I would recommend also include:

MEMORY BOX CIRCLE BASICS
MY FAVORITE THINGS CIRCLE STAX
LAWN FAWN STACKABLES

NOTE: Remember that all of these sets differ in size, so make sure to read the dimensions so you find the one that works best for you.

CIRCLE DIE TECHNIQUES 1 & 2: SHAPED CARD + EMBOSSING

5 Ways to Use Circle Dies | Nina-Marie Design

The first techniques featured today are creating a circle shaped card, plus embossing with dies. Both techniques are great by themselves, but also look fabulous when used together! To make the card I cut the card base from Audrey Blue cardstock and stamped the Elinor background on top using embossing ink. Because the embossing ink is sticky, it held the Biscotti Perfect Pearls on nicely and created a shimmery effect to the design.

5 Ways to Use Circle Dies | Nina-Marie Design

Using sentiments from the Kristina’s Love stamp and die set, along with some die cut hearts from the Clipping Hearts die, I finished off the circle shaped card.

Circle cards are one of my favorite alternatives to the usual A2 size. And the elegance of that doily Elinor pattern is enhanced perfectly by the circle shape

CIRCLE DIE TECHNIQUE 3: WINDOW CARD

5 Ways to Use Circle Dies | Nina-Marie Design

A window card is another fun way to add new life to a card design. Windows allow you to see from the front of the card to the inside, and can be altered in a variety of ways. Here I created a floating die cut shape inside my window, but you could turn the window into other things too, such as:

  • a shaker

  • have a critter or image peeking out from the inside

  • cover the window with acetate and adhere something to the front of the window

5 Ways to Use Circle Dies | Nina-Marie Design

With this card, simplicity was key. Because my floating die cut was a special effect that I wanted to make sure stood out, I needed the rest of the card to carry a simple but supporting theme. I cut the window into my A2 side-fold card, which was stamped with a Falling Hearts background.

I attached the Clipping heart die cut to the backside. The die was then sandwiched between a piece of white cardstock that had the same circle window cut out of it; this is so that the heart die cuts were cleanly and securely held in place.

5 Ways to Use Circle Dies | Nina-Marie Design

After that I added a scallop circle frame around the outside of the window and popped a sentiment banner up off the right side. The sentiment was stamped using the Laura’s Love stamp set. Be sure to check out the video to see how both the window and floating die cut inside was created!

CIRCLE DIE TECHNIQUES 4: MASKED BACKGROUND

5 Ways to Use Circle Dies | Nina-Marie Design

Have you ever tried using circle dies as masks? Its so much fun and another fabulous way to stretch the use of your dies. Plus you get to create your own custom patterns and effects with those masks – and who doesn’t love that??

For this card you won’t need many supplies; some printer paper, your circle dies and ink! Cut squares of printer paper and run them through your die cutting machine with the circle dies you want to use. With this technique you won’t be using the circle you cut, but rather the squares with the circle shape cut into it. These are your masks.

5 Ways to Use Circle Dies | Nina-Marie Design

By laying the masks onto your card base, you can then use your ink and some blending foams and create circles anywhere you like! I used the circles to create a layered – almost bokeh-like – background. Very festive and celebratory; I enhanced that feel by stamping some stars in the same ink colors I used to do my ink blending. Inks used: Hollyhock, Strawberry, Lemon Zing, Sunkist, Cotton Candy.

5 Ways to Use Circle Dies | Nina-Marie Design

The sentiment also carried the celebration theme, which is from Avery Elle’s Big Greetings set; the supporting sentiment was stamped using the You Matter set from Simon Says Stamp.

Another great thing about this card is that it is one layer, which makes it so easy to mail!

If you want to put a twist on this technique, instead of ink blending into the circles, you could adhere the circle shapes themselves onto cardstock and ink blend over top of them. Then, when you remove the circles from the cardstock, you’ll see the original cardstock color in the circle area while the rest of the card is colored with ink. Lots of ways you can customize this technique!

CIRCLE DIE TECHNIQUES 5: NEGATIVE SPACE

5 Ways to Use Circle Dies | Nina-Marie Design

The last circle die technique for today is using negative space. Instead of using the circle shape to pop my sentiment up off of the background, I reversed things. Rather, I popped the background (which has a circle die cut into it) up off of the card base. The card base has the sentiment stamped onto it, which causes the sentiment to be recessed into the design and is framed beautifully by the background panel. The sentiment is from Reverse Confetti’s The Lord’s Strength stamp set.

5 Ways to Use Circle Dies | Nina-Marie Design

Because we used the negative instead of the “positive” (i.e. the circle die cut), we achieved a totally different look and feel for this card.

The background of this card was created by stamping the Fresh Flowers #1 cling stamp from Prima onto white cardstock. I then colored the images with Copics, but in a very loose, artistic style. The flowers have a very loose, hand drawn look and I wanted to emulate that with the coloring. By using quick flicks, following the general direction and flow of the artist’s illustration, I resulted with a very fun and artsy background. I really love the end result!

I also added some sequins that I colored with Copic markers, so that they matched the colors used in the background. Since the ink in Copics are alcohol based, they can be applied to many different surfaces and will not rub off.

I hope these 5 ways for using circle dies in the video below is inspiring and that you are able to pick up some tips and tricks too! Thanks for visiting me today!

In celebration of these past three years, Altenew is hosting a special four-day blog hop! With four days, you know there is going to be so much Altenew inspiration heading your way from many talented designers! There are also prizes up for grabs, and even a shopping discount code. All these details will be listed at the bottom of this post.

In my video for the hop, I will be sharing how I created these two watercolored cards using PH Martin India Inks. For those of you that are not familiar with India Inks, I have some quick details listed here for you:

  • This particular line of India Inks come in 24 colors; both Set 1 and Set 2 each contain 12 colors.

  • Are highly pigmented, non toxic inks.

  • Ph Martin’s India Inks are completely waterproof when dry. Once the ink has dried, you will not be able to reactivate it.

  • All of these Ph Martin India Inks are transparent inks except the white and black inks. These are the only opaque colors in the India Ink line.

  • They will dry up when exposed to air. I recommend keeping the bottles closed up when not in use.

  • Colors can blend together when wet. Once dry, they layer beautifully because they are transparent and waterproof.

I have a video featuring how I store my Ph Martin India inks, instead of in the plastic open-mouth bottles they come packaged in. Be sure to check it out to learn more!

I watercolored the butterflies that are on my cards with the India inks, as well as the color trail following them.

Because these inks layer beautifully together I was able to achieve some really great effects for the color trail. The butterflies illustrate how easy it is to blend the colors together.

In my video, I only showed the creation of one of these cards since they both were created the exact same way. The only difference between the two cards are the color choices. I used a semi-rainbow color palette for the butterfly above, and a warm color combo for the butterfly below.

WOW! Glitter Die Cuts with Heat Embossing | Nina-Marie Design

Hello everyone! Today I have a SPARKLY set of cards to share with you this week that feature WOW! Sparkles Glitter, which I created for the Simon Says Stamp blog!

A couple of the most popular ways to add glitter to projects is by using sticky-backed adhesive sheets or with liquid glues. I have done both of these before, and while they work equally as well, I find I actually prefer today’s method most of all. That is, by using Ranger’s Sticky embossing powder.

WOW! Glitter Die Cuts with Heat Embossing | Nina-Marie Design

This powder is just like any other embossing powder, except that has a sticky finish when heat set. In the video below, I’ll be sharing the exact steps I took to use the embossing powder with the WOW! Sparkles glitter.

WOW! Glitter Die Cuts with Heat Embossing | Nina-Marie Design

Speaking of the WOW! Sparkles glitter, have you tried any of it before?? It’s simply GORGEOUS! I am particularly fond of the multicolored powders, such as the one you see in the photo above. I have a few of the Sparkles glitters and chose to work with the Santorini, Fireworks and Peachy Keen colors today. Which color is your favorite? Mine would be Fireworks (the one pictured in the purple card).

WOW! Glitter Die Cuts with Heat Embossing | Nina-Marie Design

One of my favorite aspects of these glitters is that they are static free! This means they won’t stick to anything and everything as badly as some other glitters can. Because of that, clean up was much easier!

WOW! Glitter Die Cuts with Heat Embossing | Nina-Marie Design

The die you see in each of these cards is the Hooray die from Neat & Tangled. Very delicate and perfect for this technique! For inside the shakers, I used Sunshine, Rain, Little Princess and Sweet 16 mixes from Simon Says Stamp. I also used a random mix from Neat & Tangled that is no longer available; however, it is comparable to a mix of both the Pretty Pink Posh 4mm Lavender sequins and Darice’s Iridescent sequins.

WOW! Glitter Die Cuts with Heat Embossing | Nina-Marie Design

I hope that today’s video inspires you to try both the WOW! Sparkles glitter and the Ranger Sticky embossing powder together to see what beautiful glitter effects you can create! The embossing powder would be perfect to use over top of solid stamped images as well for a beautiful glittery image. Lots of ways you could use these products! Thanks for visiting me today; I’ll be back again later this week with another video tutorial for you!

Studio Monday with Nina-Marie: Distress Watercolor Stamping

Distress Watercolor Stamping | Nina-Marie Design

Hello crafty friends! It’s Monday, and I’ve got a brand new video for the Simon Says Stamp blog! I wanted to bring back a technique I love and have used many times in the past. That is, Distress watercolor stamping.

First let me touch on the inspiration for this card. I saw this gorgeous watercolor art print on Pinterest the other day and fell in love with it! I decided to use it as a jumping off point for the theme and feel of this card. Here’s a look at the image:

Distress Watercolor Stamping | Nina-Marie Design

This was watercolored by an artist named Yao Cheng; she is very talented! I really love the use of color in the peaches here; lots of variegated colors that lend towards great visual interest. And her loose style has a whimsical feel that I am very drawn too.

So using Yao as inspiration, I created this card…

Distress Watercolor Stamping | Nina-Marie Design

Distress watercolor stamping is where you apply Distress Inks onto a stamped image, mist with a bit of water, and press onto watercolor paper. The effect, instead of a crisp impression, is a loose and artistic image that resembles the look of watercolor. This is a great way to get the look of watercoloring without even bringing out a paintbrush!

Distress Watercolor Stamping | Nina-Marie Design

If you are new to this technique, I would recommend trying it first with solid images, such as the ones from Altenew’s Simple Fruits stamp set. This is what I used today in my card, along with a couple other images from both the Floral Shadow and Peony Bouquet sets.

Solid images are a bit easier to work with than outline images in this case and you’ll get better results on your first attempts until you get more comfortable with the technique. You’ll get familiar with how the ink reacts to water, as well as in knowing how much water to use to achieve different looks.

Distress Watercolor Stamping | Nina-Marie Design

I used many different ink colors for the images on this card. However, if you do not have many Distress Ink colors, remember that you can still achieve a similar look with less colors. If any of you are interested in the colors I did use, I have them listed here for you:

  • Peaches: Fossilized Amber, Squeezed Lemonade, Scattered Straw, Worn Lipstick, Ripe Persimmon, Dried Marigold, Abandoned Coral

  • Leaves: Cracked Pistachio, Mowed Lawn, Shabby Shutters, Pine Needles

  • Yellow branches: Worn Lipstick, Fossilized Amber

  • Red berries: Ripe Persimmon, Pine Needles

Distress Watercolor Stamping | Nina-Marie Design

The sentiments I used were a combination of greetings from both Altenew’s Floral Shadow stamp set and Hero Arts’ Thank You Messages set. I also added sequins from Pretty Pink Posh as embellishments (Sparkling Clear mix, Sparkling Clear 3mm and Rose Gold 4mm).

Distress Watercolor Stamping | Nina-Marie Design

You may have noticed the envelope I am showing in the photos of the finished card, which is custom colored. I selected some of the Distress Inks that I had used in the “peaches” of my card and ink blended them onto the front and back of a white envelope. After adding the ink, I flicked on a bit of water to create water spots and help lend toward the watercolor feel of the card.

I could have created an envelope from thin watercolor paper and actually watercolored it – or Distress watercolor stamped a few of the images from the card onto the envelope – but I went with something a little more bold and simple here.

I hope you will be checking out the video below to see how I created this card and see the Distress watercolor stamping technique in action! Thanks for visiting me today!

Painting Backgrounds with Gansai Tambi Watercolors | Nina-Marie Design

Happy Friday everyone! Today I am excited to share another video featuring Gansai Tambi watercolors and Neat & Tangled products! Last week, I shared a video featuring these same products in a no-line coloring technique. This week – since the Gansai Tambi paints are a newer watercolor palette for me – I wanted to explore them a bit further and see how they did in creating backgrounds.

NO-LINE LAYERED WATERCOLOR

Check out the video that I created last week featuring the Gansai Tambi watercolors and Neat & Tangled stamps.

Watercolor backgrounds are something I greatly enjoy creating. The abstract feel of the watercolors, combined with how they layer and blend simply appeal to me. They are relaxing to make and allow me to have some “playtime” without having to worry about staying inside of lines or trying not to let colors mix. Backgrounds for the most part allow you to be free.

Painting Backgrounds with Gansai Tambi Watercolors | Nina-Marie Design

The Gansai Tambi watercolors worked beautifully for creating vibrant, layered backgrounds. I used all blues for these backgrounds, but you could definitely work with other colors. When I was working on painting these, I was in the mood for using blue tones; they make me think of the ocean.

In some of the backgrounds, I did use a bit of white metallic, which is included in the 36 set of Gansai Tambi watercolors. If you don’t have the Gansai Tambi paints – or do not have the 36 set – and would like to incorporate a metallic like this into your artwork, I recommend the Gansai Tambi Starry Colors set. This set of metallic watercolors are the same consistency and feel of the metallics included in the Gansai Tambi 36 set and include a few extra golds too!

I ended up creating a total of five backgrounds – which I then turned into cards – with the help of the Neat & Tangled Succulent Journaling Card die. This die coordinates with the beautiful Succulent Journaling Card stamp set. I did not use the stamps from the set today however; just the die.

Painting Backgrounds with Gansai Tambi Watercolors | Nina-Marie Design

The die is recessed into a coordinating blue cardstock frame. For a sentiment, I stamped the word “hello” in blue ink and heat embossed it with clear powder. To embellish the card, I used a few Sparkling Clear mix and 3mm sequins from Pretty Pink Posh.

Painting Backgrounds with Gansai Tambi Watercolors | Nina-Marie Design

These cards all look different and unique, which is the look I was going for. When I painted the backgrounds, I made sure to put the colors down differently on each watercolor paper panel. By varying up the paintings, I was able to make a set of cards that match, but each have their own character.

I hope today’s post has inspired you and gave you some ideas for working with watercolor backgrounds behind a die cut such as the Succulent Journaling Card, to create a pretty card set. Thanks for visiting me today; I’ll be back on Monday with a new video tutorial!

And a BIG, BIG thank you to my dear friends Danielle and Miriam from Neat & Tangled who allowed me to come guest with them this month; I had so much fun!

Friendship Cards with Simple Supplies | Nina-Marie Design

Hey Everyone! I’m stopping by with an encouragement card set that I created for Simon Says Stamp a couple weeks ago, which I never got to share. Encouragement cards cover a wide range of occasions. These cards feature products from both Pretty Pink Posh and Simon Says Stamp! I’m also going to focus on how you can use simple, inexpensive coloring supplies to get awesome effects!

Friendship Cards with Simple Supplies | Nina-Marie Design

I’m sure a large majority of us all have Crayola markers on hand somewhere in our homes. Crayola products have been in all of our lives for years! In our most recent monthly card kit, Animation, we included a box of 12 Crayola Fine Line markers. While these aren’t your artist-grade, alcohol-based Copic markers, you’d be surprised at how well these fine line Crayola markers work and what you can do with just 12 of them!

Friendship Cards with Simple Supplies | Nina-Marie Design

The one big difference these markers have in comparison to Copics is that the Crayola markers are water-based. This means that the marker ink will reactivate when it comes in contact with water. Because of the water-reactive properties, you can use these markers for watercoloring! Today I am focusing only on Crayola markers, but the same thing goes with other water-based markers, such as Tombow or Zig markers.

Friendship Cards with Simple Supplies | Nina-Marie Design

I used the markers to watercolor the adorable little kids from Pretty Pink Posh’s Friends Forever stamp set. There are four children in the set, with a few accessories too. They can be used alone, as I did here, or together to create a cute grouping! I think these would be really fun for kids to color as themselves to then send as a more “personalized” card. Imagine – with the upcoming Mother’s Day and Father’s Day holidays – how fun it would be for moms and dads to receive handmade cards with these kids colored as their own children?

Friendship Cards with Simple Supplies | Nina-Marie Design

I paired the kids with sentiments from Simon’s Uplifting Thoughts and Loving Heart stamp sets. To make the sentiments a bit more interesting, I cut the stamps apart and used multiple colored inks that matched the colors I used for the children.

Friendship Cards with Simple Supplies | Nina-Marie Design

Because these cards are meant to be encouraging, I wanted to go with something colorful. The newest plaid paper collection from Lawn Fawn – Rainbow – was the perfect papers to pair with these kiddos. I have pretty much used up all the paper I had from that pad, I love it so much! Going to have to get another one!

Friendship Cards with Simple Supplies | Nina-Marie Design

I hope today’s cards inspire you to create something encouraging for someone you know! I also hope it proves a good demonstration as to what you can do with even the simplest of coloring mediums, such as Crayola markers!

Thanks for visiting me today and spending some time with me! Stop by again next week, as I have a few videos to share featuring more Simon Says Stamp products, as well as Pretty Pink Posh’s newest release!

Gatefold Gift Card Holder | Nina-Marie Design

Happy Thursday crafters! Today is a special day, as Pretty Pink Posh celebrates their May 2017 product release! I was so excited that Paulina from Pretty Pink Posh asked me to guest for this hop. There are many beautiful and fun products in this release, which I think you will enjoy!

Gatefold Gift Card Holder | Nina-Marie Design

In the blog hop, there are many designers participating; if you’ve already been hopping along, you should have arrived from Amy Kolling’s blog. All the other hoppers and giveaway info is down at the bottom of this post.

Gatefold Gift Card Holder | Nina-Marie Design

Today I am creating a set of three gift card holders, which feature many of the new May release products from Pretty Pink Posh. Two of my favorites from this release are the Scallop Circle Tags and the Scallop Borders 2 die sets. Both are used in these cards.

The Scallop Circle Tags come in two different sizes. The set also has a small perforated flap that can be die cut into either of the tags… this would be super cute as a peek-a-boo tag, don’t you think??

Gatefold Gift Card Holder | Nina-Marie Design

The Scallop Borders 2 die set is a second addition to Paulina’s scalloped borders collection; she previously released the Scallop Borders 1 die set. This collection of both borders are so handy for a variety of things; today I used the chevron from the new Scallop Borders 2 set to create a fancy edge on my gatefold flaps. With the scalloped, chevron edge, the gatefold design instantly has a much more interesting appearance.

Gatefold Gift Card Holder | Nina-Marie Design

And how about those gorgeous florals? Those are from the new Build a Bloom stamp set, also by Pretty Pink Posh. The stamp set is made up of a bunch of different floral images that can be used to make custom bouquets and arrangements to pretty backgrounds. I used the stamps to create a tone-on-tone stamping effect for my gatefold flaps, and then on the inside of the card, create a much more colorful pattern.

By having the continuity in patterns on both the front and the inside of the card, this ties everything together. The look is not too busy because of the subtle tone-on-tone effect for the front flaps; this balances out the bright colors of the inside perfectly.

Gatefold Gift Card Holder | Nina-Marie Design

For the sentiments on these gift card holders, I was really excited to break out the new Hero Arts You Are Loved stamp set. I picked this up out at Simon Says Create last month and couldn’t wait to start using it!

I really love how there are so many unique sentiments included in this set, all centered around kindness and encouragement. I chose to use the sentiment “you are loved” on all three of these cards, along with the small heart image.

Gatefold Gift Card Holder | Nina-Marie Design

These cards really are quite easy to make and I hope you will check out the video to below to see how I created them!
