Adding Dimension to Stamped Images + Pretty Pink Posh Release Hop

0
0

Hi friends welcome to my stop in the Pretty Pink Posh August release blog hop! I have a set of beautiful thank you cards to share with you featuring the newest Pretty Pink Posh stamps, dies and sequins, as well as a fun technique on how to add dimension to your stamped images.

augustbloghop

I love adding the look of dimension to elements on my cards to add a more realistic touch; I do it often and I think its a fabulous way to take a design to the next level! I wanted to use this technique with the new Blissful Butterflies stamp and die set from Pretty Pink Posh and create the effect of butterflies flying up and off of the card. I think the result turned out so pretty!

Pretty Pink Posh Release Hop_2

I used a handful of Copic markers to quickly add simple shading to the butterflies… I did not want them to be as detailed as I normally color my stamped images because I felt that there was already a lot going on in these cards. Adding fine detail shading would have been a bit more distracting. The clean shape of the butterflies also lends to the simple styled coloring.

Concord & 9th Birthday Bash + Rainbow Backgrounds + Faux Letterpress

Hey friends, welcome back to my little craft-world! Today I am super exited and honored to be guesting with Concord & 9th for their month-long Birthday Bash celebration!

C9 Birthday Bash SQUARE

Today I will be sharing a set of bright, rainbow-background cards featuring one of my favorite Concord & 9th stamp sets, Being Classy (as well as the coordinating dies)! I will also be sharing a faux letterpress technique that you can create with your coordinating dies… the result turns out really gorgeous!

Faux Letterpress + Rainbow Backgrounds + Concord & 9th Birthday_4

I used my Zig Clean Color markers to add the color the background of this card; I love how bright and vibrant these markers are and I’ve been using them a lot lately because of how much fun they are. They also react with water beautifully, which allows you to create some fun effects with water splatters.

Faux Letterpress + Rainbow Backgrounds + Concord & 9th Birthday_1

The faux letterpress technique I will be sharing today is a great way to highlight the script sentiments of the Being Classy stamp set! This is very simple to do; I used the Sizzix Texturz Impression Plate, and Texturz Silicone Rubber Mat to help me achieve the sandwich I needed for the technique (I’ll walk you through the sandwich in the video using my Big Shot machine).

Keep in mind that the sandwich may vary depending upon your die cutting machine, but you can still create the same effect with ANY die cutting machine. The biggest key is that you’ll want a sandwich that you would use for embossing, not cutting; experiment with embossing sandwiches to find the best pressure for getting the faux letterpress effect.

Winnie & Walter Leading Lady: Part Three

0
0

Hello friends! Welcome back to my third guest post for Winnie and Walter’s Leading Lady feature… I hope you are having as much fun as I have so far! :)

Nina-Marie_Trapani_august2016

Today I want to share some inspiration on creating appealing card layouts using Winnie and Walter’s Addie’s Garden and Anna’s Flora stamp sets. The reason I chose these floral images for today’s card is because floral images are a great example of building a good layout; a poorly arranged flower bouquet isn’t as pretty as one that was more thought-out.

These floral stamps are some of my most favorite because of the beautiful detail and larger size of the images. This allows you to get creative with your coloring, which is so much fun! For this card I used a combination of Zig Clean Color markers and Copics to color the flowers and leaves.

Creating Floral Arrangements_2

When building a good floral arrangement, I like to make sure I build with a few things in mind:

Rule of thirds: It helps to balance a design when there are three elements grouped into your card. For instance; I maintained this rule by using three frames in the background, three daisies, and three pink floral clusters. The odd number sits better in your mind believe it or not!

Creating Floral Arrangements_5

Visual triangle: See how all of the major elements on this card all can be connected by a visual triangle (imagine overlaying a triangle to connect like objects together)? This helps draw attention to the more prominent elements and allows them to take center stage while still maintaining a good balance. Examples of the visual triangle are the layout of the frames in the background as well as the placement of the daisies and the pink clusters.

Creating Floral Arrangements_1

Balancing Large and/or Bold Objects: This card features two heavy (large/bold) objects; the largest daisy and the strong colors of the sentiment strip. These two items can be balanced out on the design by placing them at polar opposites. In this case, I attached the daisy at the bottom left and the sentiment along the top right of the card. By placing them apart from each other, rather than close together, this helps keep the design from being too heavy in one area.

Creating Floral Arrangements_6

Odd Numbers: Remember the rule of thirds and how odd numbers helps the design of the card sit better in your head? Well the same applies for numbers greater than three! I scattered a total of 7 clear sequins around the floral arrangement, as well as having a total of 13 larger elements on the card (12 floral elements and 1 sentiment strip). Having that odd number really ensures a good layout!

Mixed Sizes: You’ll also notice that I varied the size of almost all of my elements on the card. This helps add a bit more interest to your design, as it keeps everything from becoming too boring and repetitive. If you can vary the size of the elements on your card, this helps keep the visual attention of the viewer.

Creating Floral Arrangements_4

This may seem like a lot of work and thought to put into a card, but remember you don’t have to incorporate them all into your card all at once; I wanted to make sure they were each included in the design so I could best show you how they work together to create an overall appealing design. And trust me; the more you practice these design tips, the more you’ll start doing them automatically. This is how I started; I had to remind myself of these things as I created a card, but now it’s just part of the design process for me and I do it on “auto-pilot” so to speak! And I know that the more you practice these things, the more you will start doing them automatically too!

Before I go, I’ll quickly touch on the rest of the card process:

I stamped the images onto watercolor paper with a waterproof ink and colored the images with Zig markers. I then went back in with a couple of Copic markers and added in a bit more extra detail. I layered the flowers and die cut frames onto my card base using liquid glue; I added the sentiment (heat embossed on dark brown cardstock in white embossing powder) using foam tape. The sequins were then tucked in and around the florals using some Glossy Accents.

I hope this post has helped you learn some new tips and tricks on creating good layouts on your cards! Thanks for spending some time with me today, I will see you again next week! :)

Winnie & Walter Leading Lady: Part 4

0
0

Hello friends! Today is my final Leading Lady guest post for Winnie and Walter… how sad! But I had so much fun sharing my ideas with you and I hope you have been enjoying it too!

Nina-Marie_Trapani_august2016

Today I have a watercolor card to share featuring my favorite Winnie and Walter stencil, Pattern of the Rings; I’ve also paired this stencil with the In a Word: Hello die, and the Big, the Bold and Comfort stamp set.

Inspiration for me comes from EVERYWHERE… literally. I laugh because once I got a brilliant idea for a card (or at least, I thought it was brilliant, haha!), while I was watching a TV commercial during an NBA basketball game! The idea for this card is from a painting I saw Instagram this week and I was immediately taken by the bold, warm colors and large design.

While mine may not have the gorgeous florals this painting by Calligrafikas has, I love how the finished card turned out!

IMG_1539

I used Distress Inks to do my watercoloring on this card, as I wanted to make sure I was able to incorporate some water splatters to the design. I started off by taping the stencil to a piece of watercolor paper and coloring in the circles of the stencil with a mixture of Wild Honey, Spiced Marmalade, Ripe Persimmon and Festive Berries inks. As I painted in each circle, I did not clean my brush much (and sometimes not at all) as I switched between the colors because I wanted them to create new, in-between shades.

Watercoloring With Stencils + Distress Inks_1

The diamond shapes between each circle in the stencil came next; I watercolored those with a mixture of Seedless Preserves, Picked Raspberry and Wild Honey. I was careful not to mix the Wild Honey and Seedless Preserves too much on this round because they would just turn to a muddy color. But I allowed Seedless Preserves and Picked Raspberry to mix, along with Picked Raspberry into Wild Honey, and I love the variation in colors when you mix the inks!

Watercoloring With Stencils + Distress Inks_4

I also made sure to use very little water as I painted with the inks; this not only gave me super rich, pigmented colors, but it also kept the water from migrating under the stencil too much. Once I had removed the stencil when I was finished the watercoloring, I spritzed the panel with my Distress Sprayer (and then dabbed them up with a dry rag) to get the fun water spots.

Because the background of this card is SO bold and intense, I wanted the rest of the card to be simple and a bit on the “graphic” side… the clean lines of the simple design helps balance the visually-heavy colors in the background.

Watercoloring With Stencils + Distress Inks_2

The Hello die is cut from white cardstock and my sentiment from the Big, the Bold and Comfort stamp set is heat embossed in white onto black cardstock. A final finishing touch included a few Pretty Pink Posh Sparkling Clear sequins.

A BIG BIG thank you to Shay for asking me to be the Winnie and Walter August Leading Lady; I had such a great time sharing card ideas, tips and tricks over the past month and I hope I was able to give you some new techniques to try on your projects! Thanks for spending some time with me everyone!!

STAMPtember: Pretty Pink Posh + Shadow Box Shaker Ornament

0

Happy Saturday friends! It’s not only the weekend, but also the reveal of Simon Says Stamp’s newest STAMPtember exclusive stamp set, Winter Bird Friend, which was created by Pretty Pink Posh!

release_stamptember_pretty-pink-posh

This adorable stamp set is a perfect match to Pretty Pink Posh’s other Bird Friends stamp sets and I love that you can dress up this cutie in custom winter attire! There are also coordinating dies available as well. I did not use them in my video, as I do not have them, so you will instead see me fussy cut the images (which I love doing anyway!).

pastel-colors-shadow-box-shaker-ornament_1

I wanted to do something a bit different with this project and decided to create a fun shadow box shaker ornament! The reason I am calling this a shadow box shaker is because this shaker is a bit more dimensional than the average shaker. I’ll be explaining this in more depth in the video below, as well as showing you how exactly I built this shaker.

pastel-colors-shadow-box-shaker-ornament_2

I’ll also be featuring Zig Clean Color markers in this video and how I used them to color in the images from the Winter Bird Friend stamp set. Be sure to check out the video below!

World Card Making Day

Hi there crafty friends! HAPPY WORLD CARDMAKING DAY!!! Yes, that’s right, today is the special day where crafters all across the world celebrate the art of creating handmade cards!

wcmdbannerbloghop

Today is also a special blog hop day, because Winnie and Walter are hosting a special hop where a group of fabulous designers are all sharing inspiration for you to enjoy; I am one of guest designers joining in and I have two cards to share with you that feature a few of my favorite Winnie and Walter products! If you have already been hopping with us, you should have arrived from the fabulous Heather Hoffman’s blog!

world-card-making-day-watercolor-scene-tags_1

These two cards were made using the Essentials: Noelle Cutaway dies and the Happiest of Holidays stamp set. I love how these two paired up so well together to create these beautiful winter cards. What’s really great about these cards is that they could be indeed be used for the holidays or they could be used anytime as a pretty thank you/grateful card.

I created the tags by stamping images from the Happiest of Holidays stamp set onto watercolor paper that was  die cut into a tag using the Noelle Cutaway dies. I then watercolored the images with my Zig Clean Color markers. I did quite a bit of color mixing on these images; for example, on the cardinal I mixed yellow, red indigo and gray into the bird to get a bit of variation in its feathers. I also did some color mixing in the backgrounds of each tag to fill in some more color. I love how the background is very impressionistic, as it makes me think of the background perhaps being more holly branches in the distance with a bit of sky peeking through)!

world-card-making-day-watercolor-scene-tags_5

After watercoloring the tags, I created the rest of the cards different from each other; for the cardinal, I made the card from a Neenah Desert Storm card base (stamped with the Hero Arts Holiday Florals background stamp), and layered some pattern paper and vellum on top. The vellum has a heat embossed “frosted edging” on it, which I show how to do in this video). The sentiment is from the Happiest of Holidays stamp set, and is heat embossed on vellum with gold embossing powder.

world-card-making-day-watercolor-scene-tags_2

The second card is on a white linen card base that I scored with two rectangle dies to create a debossed frame (see more on debossing in this video). I also layered some banners and more linen paper on top and tucked a few Sparkling Clear sequins in and around the card as well. As with the first card, the sentiment is gold heat embossed onto vellum.

world-card-making-day-watercolor-scene-tags_3

I really love how pretty these cards turned out and I hope you got some inspiration out of them! HAPPY WORLD CARDMAKING DAY! And be sure to keep reading to learn more about the hop and how you can win one of the fun prizes being given away today!

For my card today, I used a couple of fun products from both Pretty Pink Posh and My Favorite Things. The fall images are from Pretty Pink Posh’s new stamp set Giving Thanks; and the grateful die and coordinating sentiment are from the My Favorite Things Grateful stamp and die collection.

messy-autumn-watercolor-background-hop_4

I wanted to do some messy watercoloring for this card, as this is one of my favorite looks for watercolored images. I used Prima’s Watercolor Confections to do the watercoloring (I used both the Classics and the Tropicals sets); the images were stamped in Cobblestone ink from Simon Says Stamp onto Canson XL watercolor paper.

messy-autumn-watercolor-background-hop_3

After coloring the images, I die cut the grateful die from Dark Chocolate cardstock from Simon Says Stamp four times; I layered the pieces together to create a stacked sentiment and then added clear embossing powder over it to create a more dimensional effect.

I then layered that sentiment onto some strips of watercolor paper and vellum that I tore the edges of, which created a more “rustic” or natural feel. I also stamped the coordinating “for you” sentiment in Schoolhouse Red ink from Simon Says Stamp.

To finish off the card, I added some hemp that I tied into the center of the card, and tucked a few watercolored leaves and acorn to the right side of the sentiment.

Retro Holiday Scene + Simon’s Believe in the Season Release

Hi friends! I am really excited to share some fun inspiration with you today that features the newest release from Simon Says Stamp called Believe in the Season!

believe-in-the-season-1080x1080-sneak

This new release is PERFECT for all your holiday crafting projects; many of these products are among some of my new favorites, including the gorgeous Winter Flowers stamp and die set, the Believe script die and the new Merlot ink color!

Also! I am really excited to share that I designed the Happy Christmas stamp set included in this release! Here’s a look at the set; I have all the other products included in the new released listed at the bottom of the post.

So how about some cards using these new products???

simon-says-stamp-believe-in-the-season-release-day_3

My first card features the Northern Lights die, the Holiday Background cling and the Holiday Message Strip stamp set. These all paired really well together and I love the bold, striking result!

The Northern Lights die is cut from both white and red cardstock; I layered the pieces slightly offset to create a subtle drop shadow, which makes the snowflakes appear more dimensional.

simon-says-stamp-believe-in-the-season-release-day_1

I layered the snowflakes onto a square card base that I stamped the Holiday Background onto using two shades of red ink; I applied a lighter red towards the top of the background stamp and darker red towards the bottom, which created an nice ombré look.

simon-says-stamp-believe-in-the-season-release-day_2

For embellishments I used Pretty Pink Posh snowflakes and Blue Lagoon Nuvo Glitter Drops scattered about the left side of the card. I LOVE the effect of the iridescent snowflakes! They add the perfect subtle amount of bling to the card without overpowering the intricate design of the Northern Lights snowflake die.

My next bit of inspiration is the opposite of the bold snowflake card and carries a more elegant feel…

simon-says-stamp-believe-in-the-season-release-day_4

The lovely poinsettias from the aptly named set, are simply beautiful. I love that there is both an outline and a solid of each image in this set too, giving many options for how this can be used. I of course love to color, so I chose to work with the outlines.

simon-says-stamp-believe-in-the-season-release-day_6

I stamped and masked the poinsettias and leaves to create two clusters. I colored the poinsettias with Copic markers and then fussy cut the entire cluster set out with fine tip scissors.

I added sparkle to the pointsettias with the Spectrum Noir clear glitter brush pen, and popped the cluster up off of a white A2 card base that I scored a frame onto (I scored the frame using a scoring board and a stylus).

simon-says-stamp-believe-in-the-season-release-day_5

My sentiment is created with the Merry Christmas script die; I cut it from both gold glitter paper and red cardstock. Because this die cuts both words together (the words are joined), I trimmed the “merry” and “Christmas” words apart and adhered them together to create the single die once again.

And yes, I did lose the tittle of the letter “I” during the creating of this card; I couldn’t find it and settled for finishing the card without it! I think the card looks fine despite the missing dot over the “I”.

simon-says-stamp-believe-in-the-season-release-day_11

Finally I have one more card to share with you, yet again completely different than the other cards I’ve shown you so far! This one carries a more “retro” feel to it, which I really love!

I used both the Color Me Tree stamp and die set, and the Happy Christmas stamp set. I think the style of the sentiment matches the look of the tree I used in this card; the combo really creates a fun effect.

I created a video for you featuring this fun retro-styled card! I’ll be sharing a look at the Color Me Trees stamp and die set, as well as all the details on how I brought this card together!

Also remember that tomorrow Simon Says Stamp has a FABULOUS blog hop in store for you! I will be one of the stops in the hop, so make sure you come back tomorrow to see more inspiration featuring the Believe in the Season release!

Simple Realistic Copic Coloring + Simon’s Believe in the Season Hop!

Hello and HAPPY FRIDAY friends! I am very happy you are stopping by today, as I am honored to be part of the Simon Says Stamp Believe in the Season release BLOG HOP!

believe-in-the-season-600x263-hop

If you have already been hopping along (and arrived from the amazingly talented Suzy’s blog) – or are just joining in – a big welcome to all!

Simon just released a whole collection of simply gorgeous holiday-themed products, and I have had SO many ideas for all these products, I literally couldn’t stop creating with them! Today I have THREE cards to share with you, and if you haven’t stopped by my blog lately, you’ll want to check out this post I shared yesterday where I created three more cards using a variety of items from the new release.

So let’s see some inspiration, right??

simon-says-stamp-believe-in-the-season-release_8

My first card features one of my favorite new sets from the release; Winter Flowers! Aren’t they just gorgeous?? I did watercoloring for these using my Zig Clean Color markers. I only used one shade of marker on each image, which illustrates that you really don’t need every marker in the collection (unless you are plagued with Full Set Syndrome like so many of us crafters seem to be!).

simon-says-stamp-believe-in-the-season-release_7

The coordinating dies make cutting out all these images a breeze (which is good because I used A LOT of images on this card and that would have been quite a job fussy cutting!). I love that you can even pop up some of the smaller single berries over the berries in the cluster image too; this creates a bit more dimension to the design I think.

simon-says-stamp-believe-in-the-season-release_5

My sentiment is from the Christmas Essentials stamp set; I really like the classic feel of the font in this sentiment because it can pair with absolutely any style of card perfectly!

simon-says-stamp-believe-in-the-season-release_6

The images are all clustered onto an ivory colored card base and I also added Spectrum Noir sparkle and Glossy Accents over some of the images too. Easy-peasy design and SO MUCH FUN to make!

Next card!

simon-says-stamp-believe-in-the-season-release_1

The Christmas Essentials set was on my desk after making that first card, so I kept it out and used it to create a watercolor background, also using my Zig markers. I again purposely used very few markers for the coloring, because I love experimenting to see how much dimension I can create on an image using just a single marker.

simon-says-stamp-believe-in-the-season-release_3

For the sentiment, I used the gorgeous Believe script die, and cut it from both Simon’s Ruby Red Glimmer cardstock and watercolor paper that I added color to using the same flesh color marker I used in the background.

I popped that believe sentiment off the card and tucked a smaller heat embossed sentiment underneath (from the Simon Says Stamp Christmas Toys stamp set that was released during STAMPtember). For some finishing touches, I scattered a few sequins around and layered some more glimmer cardstock behind my watercolored panel (this time I used Sunshine glimmer cardstock).

simon-says-stamp-believe-in-the-season-release_4

My final card for today features the beautiful Poinsettias stamp set and the same Believe die I used in the card above.

simon-says-stamp-believe-in-the-season-release_12

I created a similar looking card yesterday that featured the Poinsettia stamp set; I love how it turned out so much that I wanted to create a second version, but adjust it slightly and incorporate a few extra products from the new release.

AND I filmed the entire process for you! In the video below, I’ll share the details on how I created this card, including how easy it was to add the realistic shading to the images (trust me, it is easy!).

simon-says-stamp-believe-in-the-season-release_11

So be sure to watch the video to see the entire card come together, as well as get some tips and tricks on creating a stencil-embossed background with your die cutting machine, and adding a frosted-glass edge to vellum!

Studio Monday with Nina Marie: Debossing + Distress Ink + Penny Black

0

Hi crafty friends! I’m stopping by to let you know that I am over on the Simon Says Stamp blog this morning with a brand new Studio Monday video for you!

This week we are featuring Penny Black products, and I’ll be sharing two fun techniques that I used to create backgrounds; debossing with a die and Distress Ink smooshing! Background dies can be a bit pricey and I wanted to show you how much more versatile these dies really are, which makes the higher price point more worthwhile.

Here’s a sneak peek at one of the two cards I created:

These two sets worked so well together and I love the bright, vintage feel this card seems to evoke. I have created a video for you showing how I created this card from start to finish, which I hope you will be checking out below!

realistic-snow-watercolor-stamping-hop_2

In the video, I will be sharing details on how I created the pretty, dimensional snow effect that I have on the evergreen tree. Isn’t it so cool???? This was REALLY easy to do and I will show you how I used two very simple products to achieve this effect. The Sketched Evergreen stamp set is one of Altenew’s newest stamp sets and I know I am going to need to break this set out again because it was so fun to use!

realistic-snow-watercolor-stamping-hop_5

Did you see the new sequins that Pretty Pink Posh just released this month?? This card features some of them (Holiday Shimmer & Snowflake Mix! I used the 4mm & 6mm sequins to make ornaments for the tree, and then the snowflake and star combo at the top is the perfect finishing piece for the tree.

So I hope you’ll check out the video to see this card come together! Keep on reading to find out more details on the hop and GIVEAWAYS!
